Getting around Granada
Granada has city bus routes. New buses arrived in February 2026, and six of them brought back the route along the lakeshore, meant for visitors too.
Places worth seeing when you arrive.
A boat trip among hundreds of tiny islands on Lake Cocibolca, with Mombacho volcano behind.
Cloud-forest trails with steaming vents and lookouts over Granada and the islets.
Cassava with pork crackling and cabbage salad on a banana leaf, the dish born in Granada.
A colourful pedestrian street of restaurants and music, from the cathedral down to the lake.
A museum of pre-Columbian stone statues brought from the lake's islands.

Granada is one hour from Managua. The UCA minibus is the fastest and most comfortable way; the Huembes bus is cheaper and stops in Masaya.

No bus goes down to the lake shore. Any bus between Granada and Masaya or Managua drops you at the entrance, and from there you go down by taxi, mototaxi or on foot.

There is no direct bus between Granada and León. You take two minibuses via UCA in Managua, about 3 hours in total, or a direct tourist shuttle.
Mid-February
A week of readings, music and a poetic carnival in Granada's colonial streets, with poets from dozens of countries.
August 14–15
The country's most famous horse parade rides through central Granada, with parties on Calle La Calzada and processions for the Virgin of the Assumption.
